Records of the liberal weekly magazine, the Nation, primarily during the editorship of Freda Kirchwey. Other editors and contributors represented include Julio Alvarez del Vayo, Robert Bendiner, Harold C. Field, J. King Gordon, Margaret Marshall, Carey McWilliams, Lillie Shultz, Maxwell Slutz Stewart, I.F. (Isidor F.) Stone, Jerry Tallmer, and Hugo Van Arx. Significant issues documented in the collection include bans on the Nation, the atomic era, political refugees, the Philippines, and Spain and the Spanish civil war. Types of material present include correspondence, memoranda, articles, photographs, notes, a few galley and page proofs, one drawing, clippings, and other printed material. Over half of the collection is correspondence with subscribers, supporters, and writers, the remainder comprising fund raising, business, financial and legal records.
